Two thirds of Americans have library cards. So what's stopping you? Stop by the library during September. It's Library Card Sign-up Month and Liberal Memorial Library wants to make sure that your child has the smartest card of all - a library card.

A library card is the most important school supply of all. Kids can come to the library to get homework help through Homework Kansas and check out books but they can also come and check out music, DVDs, and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun.

Speaking of teens, Teen Gaming night is going to be Tuesday, September 23 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. So stop by and jazz with some Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution.

As well, any middle schoolers and high schoolers interested in joining the Teen Advisory Board send a message at http://myspace.com/lmlibrary .

Why a library card is cool:

Reason One: Why buy when you can borrow? The library is a goldmine of books, magazines, movies, CDs, and other great stuff. If you don't see it, ask!! We may be able to get it fro you.

Reason Two: Make learning fun. Check out reading clubs, story hours, movies and other programs.

After a brief hiatus in the month of August, the book discussions are back up for the fall. The latest selection of the Library and Lunch group is Alice Hoffman's "The Third Angel". It's a novel told in three stories connected by the same characters and the same places over different periods of time. It begins in the 1990s, and reverts back to the 1960s, and then the 1950s. It can easily be read backwards. It's of events happening either too late or too early but never at the right time.

So grab your lunch and join us on Tuesday, September 9 at noon!!

The Other Boleyn GirlThe Book and Movies series selection this month is Philippa Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl". It's the story of the Boleyn sister rivalry between Anne and Mary over King Henry VIII of England . It's told through the fictional narrative of Mary as Anne becomes Henry's main interest and Mary watches as her sister rises toward her own ambition. It also tells of the story that develops between Mary and her first husband as he starts to court her. I wonder what happens at the end.

The book discussion will be on Thursday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. For further details contact the library at 626-0180 ext. 8.

Copies of the novels are available at the library. Just ask at the front desk.

Story time with Carol will be starting again on Thursday, September 4. There are three age groups - Preschoolers for ages 3 to 5 from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.; Toddlers for ages 19 months to 35 months from 10:20 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.; and Infant (lapsit) for birth through 18 months from 10:55 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Parents can pre-enroll but it is not absolutely necessary.

On Tuesday, September 23 at 9:30 a.m. there will be A Very Beginners Computer Class in Spanish for those who speak minimal or no English and wish to learn the basics of computer use. There is a limit of four individuals so call the library today.

On Wednesday, September 24 at 9:30 a.m. there will be A Very Beginners Computer Class in English. There is also a limit of four individuals so call or stop by the library to sign up. Most importantly, bring questions with you! We can cover whatever you want to learn.

Both classes will start off with the basics of logging into a computer, how to use a mouse, create an email account, and create and send email. If you're comfortable with how that works, we can go further and play around with discovering news mediums online, how to online shop, and make online payments. It's all up to you!

Reason Three: It's never too late!! Use the library 24/7 online by logging into your library account at http://lmlibrary.org

Reason Four: Need homework help? Encourage your child to utilize the library, its resources, and its connectivity to Homework Kansas .

Reason Five: Studies show that children who are read to at home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

So stop by the library this month to get a library card.
