If one were to check the internet site featuring bizarre and unusual holidays, some interesting things would show up. Unfortunately, readers have already missed Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day. Those of you with an abundance of this crop this season will understand the temptation to perform such an act!

The two holidays on the list which seemed enticing were Book Lovers' Day and Lazy Day. Book Lovers' Day supposedly took place the 9th , whereas, Lazy Day is August 10. About Book Lovers' Day, the site states, "Book reading is a great hobby. It's an important one, too. Employers look for it on resumes. Reading is educational, informative, and relaxing. It makes us both smarter and happier people."

To you avid book lovers out there, here's an excellent suggestion in case you missed your day yesterday.combine Book Lovers' Day and Lazy Day into one for a great celebration. Think how you could recharge your juices so you would be ready to head into the work week completely refreshed.

In case you'd like to lead your children toward some great reads for Lazy Day, here are some new additions to the children's collection. Recently added were a whole series of books covering different aspects of the United States governmental process. Titles include The Presidency, the Supreme Court, the Bill of Rights, Congress, The Constitution, and more. Too academic in these last few days before the start of school?

Guys especially will enjoy a series called Torque which includes B-2 Stealth Bombers, Predator Drones, U-2 Planes, Apache Helicopters, and Abrams Tanks. For animal lovers, a whole series of books called Nature's Children has been added covering a wide variety of animals from marine life, to birds, to mammals of all kinds.

Lady Liberty, a Biography by Doreen Rappaport is a beautifully illustrated book which is told from the perspective of each of the individuals who had something to do with the statue's coming into being.

One HenTwo of our new fiction books are based on true stories. The first, One Hen, is about the big difference a small loan made to a young man from the Ashanti region of Ghana in Africa . The back of the book offers readers a chance to contribute to a microlending organization. The whole concept is interesting and could show children how dreams can indeed become reality and how important it is that someone else is willing to invest in our dreams.

The other based on a true story book is My Chincoteague Pony. The tale relates the experiences of a young girl who attended a surplus pony sale on Chincoteague Island off the Virginia coast. Every young girl who dreams of owning her own pony will love this heartwarming story.

My Chincoteague PonyChapter book fiction that is new includes Mary Pope Osborne's latest Magic Tree House adventure, Dark Day in the Deep Sea . The non-fiction companion to go along with the story, Sea Monsters, is also new to our collection. Fans of Sara Pennypacker's Clementine will enjoy the antics of this precocious little girl in Clementine's Letter.

Drawing to a close, here are just a few tidbits of information. Our pre-literacy kit promotion has ended for another year. Two hardworking youngsters earned free school supplies in a colorful I'm Ready to Read backpack. The winners were Madeleine Johnson and Oscar Civis. Congratulations to these kindergartners! And thank you to all who put forth the effort to take part in this promotion.

Storytimes will begin again on September 4. Phone the children's department (626-0180, ext 4) with any questions or to enroll your child.

Don't forget Yo-Yo SpinMaster Brent Dellinger on Saturday, August 16, at 2 p.m. at the Showcase Theater on the Seward County Community College Campus. The presentation draws our summer reading program to a close for the year and tee shirts and certificates will be awarded as well. Come on out, even if you didn't take part in summer reading-everyone is welcome.

Enjoy Book Lovers' Day and Lazy Day and we'll see you at Memorial Library!
