I consider myself to be more or less up on the latest trend and website. As a librarian I need to know the information resources out of the World Wide Web, so I’m all too familiar with Wikipedia. However, when I was checking out the final Summer Reading Program presenter Brent Dellinger, I discovered something new. The YoYo Wiki website. I realize that anyone can have a wiki through the website but there is a wiki resource for the yo-yo world. Now, that’s pretty cool.

According to the resource, Brent Dellinger is a member of the YoYo Jam and has been the U.S. YoYo champion in both 2002 and 2005. He’s since retired from competition but has three different signature yoyos: the Spin Master, the Spin Master 2, and the Spin Master 3. So to check out his signature spin masters come by the Seward County Community College Showcase Theater on Saturday, August 16 from 2:00 pm to 3:00pm. It’s the library’s final program of the Summer Reading Program. Certificates and tee shirts will be awarded at this time. YoYos will also be offered for sale following the performance. Everyone is invited so we hope to see you there. If you have any questions regarding the event, contact Carol at 626-0180 ext. 4.

The Summer Reading Program has been really fun. I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing all the new faces who have come into the library.

Just a reminder: the Pre-Literacy Kit Promotion ends on Monday, August 4. So, don’t forget to get your final papers in. The kits are designed to provide guidelines to help and reinforce skills that are beneficial when children start school. They’re available for check out throughout the year.

The library’s foray into social networking has been great! If you haven’t checked out our myspace page, go to myspace.com/lmlibrary. It’s always great to welcome new community members out in cyberspace. Also, if you check out our teen myspace you’ll find that we have a lot of great young adult authors as friends. It’s always grand to find out what their newest writing endeavors are and what new authors have come out into the publishing world. So check those out. If you’re a teen, we’d love to find out what your preferences are when it comes to books! We’re always looking to serve what interests you in terms of our collection development and programming. So send us a message through the site!

We’re taking a small hiatus from Library and Lunch and the Book and a Movie Series for the month of August. However, we’re going to come back full force with our newest selections for the month of September. For Library and Lunch we will be discussing The Third Angel by Alice Hoffman and for the Book and Movie series it will be Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl. If you’re interested in the upcoming selections, contact me at 626-0180 ext. 8. Dates are yet to be determined.

The library has quite a few new books in the last week. In children’s books, we have Jane O’Connor’s Fancy Nancy and the boy from Paris and Fancy Nancy at the museum; Mo Willems’ I love my new toy! and I will surprise my friend!; Jonathan London’s Froggy goes to camp; and the wicked history series of biographies that include Genghis Khan, Grigory Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible, Leopold II, Mary Tudor, Robespierre, Tomas de Torquemada and Vlad the impaler.

In the young adult section we have Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl; several new graphic novels from the Shonen Jump series; E. Lockhart’s The boy book: a study of habits and behaviors, plus techniques for taming them; Deborah Gregory’s Catwalk; Alex and Brett Harris’ Do hard things: a teenage rebellion against low expectations; Margaret Peterson Haddix’s Found; and Catherine O’Flynn’s What was lost.

In adult books, we have Melody Carlson’s I Heart Bloomberg; Bobby Flay’s grill it!; Richard Liebmann-Smith’s The James boys; Meg Cabot’s Queen of babble series; Rita Mae Brown’s The sand castle; Rich Bass’ memoir Why I came West; and Ridley Pearson’s Killer View. There are quite a lot more as well. So stop by the library and check them out. There’s always something going on at the library!! Don’t be a stranger once fall hits!
