Those unfamiliar with the program will want to know that their child may take part in two different ways. Those children who just want to read during those weeks may come to the library, sign up, and set a reading goal for the five-week period. Part of the packet they will receive will include a reading log. Parents can assist the children in keeping track of their hours. Parents of pre-readers will keep track of the time the children are read to. The parents sign off on the log at the end of the program and turn it in-no later than noon on July 5-and summer reading shirts will be ordered. Logs must be in by that date so that adequate time will be given to get them back to the library by our final program when they will be awarded.

For youngsters who would like to come to our special weekly sessions for each age group, parents can sign them up in the same manner then let the sign-up staff person know your child plans to come to weekly sessions. This will help in preparation of crafts and other materials. The schedule for those age groups is as follows:

  • Entering 4th - 6th grade
    Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Entering 2nd - 3rd grade
    Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Entering K - 1st grade
    Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
  • Preschoolers 3 to 5 years old
    Thursdays from 9:15 to 10:00 a.m.
  • Toddlers 19 months through 35 months
    Thursdays from 10:20 to 10:40 a.m.
  • Infants birth through 18 months
    Thursdays from 10:55 to 11:15 a.m.

Each group that meets during the week will have age-appropriate stories and activities, a chance to see some friends from school, and even a chance to make some new friends.

A big draw during our summer program is the special presentations which are available to anyone who wishes to attend. This year's line up includes a beekeeper on Thursday, June 5, at 2:30 p.m. Patrons should be aware that the beekeeper will have live bees with him. The second week will feature two programs. On Monday, the 9 th , Lee Richardson Zoo will be with us presenting a program entitled Invertebrates. This will begin promptly at 2:30. Because of zoo contract requirements, once the program has begun, no late arrivals will be admitted. Additionally, children who are attending must remain seated and do nothing to disturb the animals being displayed. Later in the week, the Orkin Man will join us on the 12th at 6:30 p.m.

Traveling Lantern comes on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. to present The Caterpillar Hunter. This is a take off on the Crocodile Hunter. If you have not had the privilege of seeing this group perform, they do their entire presentation with two actors and a scenery set which they carry with them. It is very impressive and something you won't want to miss.

Attendees of the scheduled program on Monday, June 23, at 2:30 p.m., will learn all about entomology. Finally, on the fifth week, juggler Brian Wendling will be on the library lawn to provide not only his juggling skills but some comedy as well. This program is June 30 at 6:30 p.m.

When thoughts to turn the new school year, Memorial Library will be presenting its final program of summer. Mark Saturday, August 16, at 2 p.m. on your calendar. Internationally known Yo-Yo SpinMaster Brent Dellinger will be in Liberal to dazzle us with his yo-yo skills. This program will take place at the Showcase Theater on the Seward County Community College campus. Brent does an amazing light show at the end of his performance which will be much more effective in the darkened theater.

Library staff is excited about this summer's activities and hope that you will encourage young people in your life to take part. If you missed the teen column, there will be special activities this year just for teens. Please phone the library for details or stop by the week of May 27 when sign up begins. See you at Memorial Library!
