McMillan, Milburn, Nebraska rancher, while digging post holes near an old corral, unearthed the heart-shaped branding iron shown above, hanging on the old log cabin wall. The corral had been used many years before on the Rankin Ranch for branding horses. The old iron proved to be the Heart Brand of the famous Olive Brothers, who had ranched in that area in 1877. Old John Kirkpatrick, shown above at age 70 while steer-roping, lived on his little ranch on Skull Creek, near Cody, Wyoming. "Old John," as everyone called him, was once, in 1934, a guide, to the ranches on the Clark's Fork of the Yellow-stone when the author was buying horses in that area.
