Text: A Ranchers Treasure Find - T.J. McMillan, Milburn, Nebraska rancher, while digging post holes near an old corral, unearthed the heart-shaped branding iron shown above, hanging on the old log cabin wall. The corral had been used many years before on the Rankin Ranch for branding horses. The old iron proved to be the Heart Brand of the famous Olive Brothers, who had ranched in that area in 1877. The iron had been buried for 80 years. The author offered McMillan $100.00 for his relic but hte rancher would not sell. Photo by author. (sentence underlined)

Text: Death Valley Treasures - The real treasures to be found in Death Valley today by a thirsty tourist or TH'er is a drink of cool water at the hospitable Furnace Creek Ranch. The "treasures" that Death Valley Scotty found somewhere in the vicinity have never been located again. Most folks believe that Scotty's eastern friend supplied the money that built the fabulous desert (word crossed out, with arc under and above) retreat of the old desert rat. The ranch operated, according to Marion W. Eldridge from whom this photo was obtained, from the late 1800s to 1897. His father Marion W. Eldridge, Sr., was foreman from 1892 to 1897. Trail is 60 to 100 feet in width, individual trails worn into tough [?] from 6 inches to 1 1/2 feet in depth. Little or no sage brush grows on old trail, making it easy to see. This is shown in the photo above where Billy Custer and his wife and baby watch their butchers dress out a beef on their ranch on the Cimarron River, in Kansas, about 1888.
