Chrisman 1957 west of Liberal, Kansas [note] Victim of the Plow Pioneer cattlemen told early settlers that it would be difficult to make a living by the plow on the arid southwest plains. But nothing could stop the tide of settlement. An Indian, looking at the plowed earth, grunted: "white man heap fool; turn earth upside down." Though the wind has always blown over the southwest plains, causing "sandstorms," it created small damage until the great plows turned the buffalo grass under. Then the earth began to move. Thousands of acres of land were rendered fit only for Soil Bank use. Some has been re-seeded to grass. This photo was taken in 1957 four miles west of Liberal, Kansas. Photo by Author. Dodge City - Rath City- Mobeetie - Fort Griffin [paragraph starts] Merchant, Indian trader, hide buyer, Charles Rath was one of the best-known men in the Southwest Plains area. He married Carrie Markely in Sweet Wine, Ohio, in 1870, came to Kansas in 1871, to Dodge City in 1872. Carrie returned to Ohio in 1873 where their first child, Jesse Crane, a son, was born. Had she remained in Dodge he would have been the first white child born there. [next paragraph] Rath had two brothers at Dodge ---- Criss and William. Wm lived over the old frame store building, corner of Bridge (Second) and Front Streets. [next paragraph] Rath had two other children by Carrie Markley Rath --- a son Robert and a daughter Bertha. Where no effort was made to hold it, many areas blew away, exposing the sandstone basement. In the year April 19 - 1922 out of the two crews of 5 men. Each their is only one man still alive he is Tom Shook who lives in Pratt, Ks. now retired. [back note 2] On the reverse of this photo, my friend, O.B. Wimmer wrote: "These are the two engines in the wreck between Kismet and Plains, Kansas.
