An acquaintence of mine, Rusty Morse, of Arvada, Colorado, wrote in the Denver Post's Empire Magazine, August 6, 1978, that Doubleday was buried in an unmarked grave at Council Bluffs, Iowa, in his sister's plot. His casket, Morse wrote, bore a ten-gallon hat, the gift of his friend, movie star Tom Mix. - Harry E. Chrisman, 10245 W. 14th Avenue, Denver, Colorado, 80215. [caption under pictures] Harry Chrisman's photo collection includes R.R. Doubleday's photo of Bonnie Grey on King Tut at left. Here, on visit to Crooked L in 1957, Bernard roped the photographer. Astride horse in back is McNaughten, co-owner with Batman [horse] of present Crooked L, Meade, Kans. His name then drops out of the old telephone directories so he must have left Liberal (or) perhaps, died. His wagon yard address was listed as "South Liberal" or South of Rock Island tracks. The street at lower right is believed to be (Liberal Iron and Metal) St. so the barn was about where lights Sporting Goods or Maliney Cleaners is in 1960.

Mrs. Furnas, whose maiden name was Ella McClure, is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. P. McClure, who were very early pioneer residents of Southwest Kansas, and who in later years lived in a two story house at the corner of Grant Ave. and Third St., where the Campion Clinic now stand. Mrs. Furnas is the widow of Marion Eidson, and Will McClure was her brother. She writes: "The picture was of the livery stable and animal hos-pital which was built on the lot on the north side of Second St. (200 block) where Bill Lampe's livery stable had been in the early days of freighting from Liberal to the distant ranches. It marked the change from 'cattle country' to the 'wheat era,' which Southwest Kansas became with the advent of the automobile and oil in-dustry." SWDT - July 19, 1960

The photographer Kirkland of Cheyenne caught this excellent group of saddlehorses on the Roundup near Cheyenne. Some of the stock had, by this time, been crossed with Morgan, American Bred Saddler and even Thoroughbred stock. Con Jackson was one of the better bucking horse riders in southwest Kansas and the Neutral Strip. Con caught and broke wild horses with Perry Bright [righ circled with line going to top of page towards Brite] Brite. He also did some contest riding, capturing top prizes wherever he showed. He liked to set out with his friend, Walt Naylor (as they did to the Kingman Fair, one time and [insert symbol] in 1900) "try out a few broncs for size."
