| Text: [stamp] HARRY E. CHRISMAN LANE D, APT. 74 BLUEBONNET COURTS LIBERAL, KANSAS [attached copy] From Thurs., Oct., 24 Guymon Herald (newspaper name underlined) -- Quoted from Liberal News (newspaper name underlined) [headline] FIRST AEROPLANE FLIGHT IN LIBERAL, OCT. 13, 1912 [paragraph] The plane spent some time in the air and reached an elevation of six hundred feet and sailed around the fairground for several minutes during the two flights. The first flight, however, came near being a fatal one. The plane ran down the center of the race track before take-off. As it left the ground, tumble weeds on the track clung to the steering gear beneath the plane. When the plane reached an elevation of about 200 feet the operator found he could not steer the plane properly. The plane dipped recklessly and threatened, ast he editor of the Liberal News (newspaper name underlined) told to, "turn turtle." The aviator managed to make a safe landing after banking precariously for his return to the landing field. "Those weeds made that sharp turn, not I," he told the spectators. "You folks saw the sharpest turn made that can be made in an aeroplane and not spill the operator out onto the ground!" The spectators who failed to hear the pilot's words after the spectacular event never knew but what it was all a part of the show. | ||||

THE 60-MILE STRETCH BETWEEN THE TWO RIVERS, KNOWN AS THE "JORNADA," WAS A PERILOUS ROUTE FOR MEN AND ANIMALS IN DRY SEASONS WHEN WAGON TRAINS OFTEN RAN OUT OF WATER. HERE ALSO FIERCE PLAINS INDIANS FREQUENTLY ATTACKED AND PLUNDERED THE CARAVANS. NEAR HERE IN 1831 THE NOTED WESTERN EXPLORER AND FUR TRADER JEDEDIAH SMITH, LOST FOUR DAYS WITHOUT WATER, WAS KILLED BY COMANCHES JUST AS HE REACHED THE RIVER. A: The size of the town meant little, it was how many musicians lived there that counted. Liberal, Kansas, founded in 1888, when the CK & N Railroad reached there, had a town band the following year. Their (later) football team received its name from a remark by a visiting newspaper editor who heard the band play and said "They play like a band of wild Indians!" Thus the Liberal Redskins are the high school football team today. | ||||

| Text: [back] "A "Blown" Area" - "They plowed up the Southwest Cattle Range ... but the Kansas winds continued to blow." No negative; Picture by H.E. Chrisman 1957 west of Liberal, Kansas [note] Victim of the Plow Pioneer cattlemen told early settlers that it would be difficult to make a living by the plow on the arid southwest plains. But nothing could stop the tide of settlement. An Indian, looking at the plowed earth, grunted: "white man heap fool; turn earth upside down." Though the wind has always blown over the southwest plains, causing "sandstorms," it created small damage until the great plows turned the buffalo grass under. Then the earth began to move. Thousands of acres of land were rendered fit only for Soil Bank use. Some has been re-seeded to grass. This photo was taken in 1957 four miles west of Liberal, Kansas. Photo by Author. What I have read about Dodge City, Kansas, and seen in films and on TV leads me to believe it was about the most backward town on the frontier. Was this so? A. Dodge City had a cultural life that was seldom depicted for the public in films. The painting, shown here, titled A Frontier Christmas in Dodge City, [A Frontier Christmas in Dodge City is underlined] and painted by the noted artist, H. Charles McBarron, better depicts the warm companionship of family and friends than has been otherwise done in film or story. Dodge is still a friendly town. [note] Con Jackson aboard Quanah Parker - Riding the horse with circingle, double-hand hold, horses head free. A rough way to ride. Try it, sometime! Con Jackson was one of the better bucking horse riders in southwest Kansas and the Neutral Strip. Con caught and broke wild horses with Perry Bright [righ circled with line going to top of page towards Brite] Brite. He also did some contest riding, capturing top prizes wherever he showed. He liked to set out with his friend, Walt Naylor (as they did to the Kingman Fair, one time and [insert symbol] in 1900) "try out a few broncs for size." Con was also a good roper and won contest money in the steer roping contests. At that time they roped Texas longhorns, range-raised, wild stock. Con later worked for a meat packing house as xxxxxxx livestock buyer. Burris Wright and Frank Peacock both said, "Con was one of the best." -- Photo courtesy Mrs. [insert symbol] Mary Elizabeth Rogers | ||||
